My introduction to Reiki and the elderly

Reiki and Transition

Three and half years ago, I was introduced to the Reiki energy. My mother-in-law was dying from Cancer, and she was fortunate enough to have a Reiki practitioner come into her home and offer this sacred energy. I was close to my mother-in-law and loved her enormously. It was important to be by her side while she transitioned to the other side. My husband, children and I sat with her every minute while her body and mind deteriorated, it was heart breaking to let her go, but we all knew she was ready. We played classical music for her, rubbed lavender (her favorite scent) lotion on her feet and chest, lit candles and sat beside her bed holding her hand while my children played Monopoly on the floor in front of her bed. She slept most of the time, but would wake and smile at us with her beautiful blue eyes, telling us all was well, and it was her time. My mother-in-law loved the Reiki energy, it relaxed her and alleviated the pain.

I was drawn to this energy like a magnet. I knew in my heart Reiki was something for me to look into. Once I returned to Alberta from Vancouver Island, I attended a Natural Healing College and absorbed everything I could. Watching my mother-in-law take her last breath initiated the healer in me. I’ve been studying and practicing Reiki ever since her death and have witnessed amazing shifts in peoples energy and health time after time.

Reiki can be used to treat terminal conditions- although there is no guarantee of remission at any age. Reiki can gently guide a person through the death transition peacefully.

Treating the elderly

Some elderly people are lonely- many live without a partner and family near by. The lack of touch contributes to physical decline and weakens the immune system. Reiki and Reflexology are perfect treatments for the elderly, they aren’t as intrusive as massage, but still provide touch as a key element.
I treat my client Edyth, who is over 90 years old; for her arthritis, there is now no shaking when she is on the massage table, she is at peace and VERY relaxed. Reiki is extremely beneficial for easing the pain experienced in the joints. By ‘being’ with Edyth and offering her the energy, she feels safe, loved and grounded.

Reiki has been a blessing for many.

Wow fabulous! Love this. So happy that someone like minded who has such respect for the elderly found another way to help them. Wow. I’d love to do that as well. I have been wanting to sign up for Reiki I. It will work out soon. Love this. Thank you. Love and light. Many blessings to you.

Do you treat these Elderly patients in a retirement home? Before I stumbled upon this blog I had the idea that I would like to gift sessions to elderly patients after I receive my attunments. Do you have trouble with those that are not ambulatory? If so what do you do? Do you just treat the positions that you can reach? I would be very grateful to hear your techniques as I would love to do this as a way to give back to the Elderly Community. I Love them dearly and want to do something to give them peace and healing.
